The captain of the superyacht "Bayesian" that sank off the coast of Palermo, leaving behind 7 victims, has been questioned by the prosecutors who are investigating their deaths.

The British-flagged superyacht sank in the early hours of last Monday after being hit by a tornado and a five-day search was launched to find the bodies of those missing.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, American lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda and yacht chef Recaldo Thomas were the seven victims of the incident. .

Captain James Cutfield and 14 others managed to escape after the yacht sank while anchored off the coast of Porticello, Sicily. Sources from the local prosecutor's office told Sky News that the 51-year-old New Zealand captain is under investigation on possible charges of manslaughter and sinking the ship.

Being under investigation does not make him the perpetrator, but it could mean Cutfield will be banned from leaving the country, although no such order has yet been issued.

News of the captain under investigation was first reported by Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Il Corriere della Sera. Being under investigation in Italy means authorities will question the captain and assess evidence before deciding whether he should be prosecuted or not.

Investigators spoke with Cutfield Sunday for the second time in a week, questioning him for more than two hours. Local media reports suggest that prosecutors may also investigate a crew member who was on duty when the storm hit and survived the incident.

These moves come at a time when prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio has said that "conduct that was not completely in order" may have contributed to the high death toll on board. He said investigators will focus on finding out whether all the people on board had been warned about safety procedures.

“Liability can fall on all crew members ... manufacturers ... or those who were not watching or supervising the vessel. But all lines of inquiry can be considered, including the role of extreme weather that hit the area," he added.

Meanwhile, Captain Cutfield and his eight surviving crew members have yet to make any public comment on the disaster, but the chief executive of the firm that builds and sells yachts like the Bayesian told Sky News last week that ships like her Lynch tycoons are "unbreakable".

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said there are no flaws in the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht.
