An FSB (Russia's Federal Security Service) 'girlfriend for rent' described as 'extremely sexy' is at the center of a spy operation in which Russian and Ukrainian intelligence agents apparently sought to outdo each other.
Russia has come out publicly claiming to have foiled an audacious plot to lure pilots of Vladimir Putin's air force to defect and fly their warplanes into Ukraine. The FSB claimed the scheme was created by British and Ukrainian intelligence to embarrass the Kremlin.
However, a new claim revealed by an investigator who says he was monitoring the operation for a documentary is that the Russians suffered a major failure. The sudden appearance of Maria - a supposedly 'very sexy woman' by the FSB - proved to Ukrainians that a clumsy Lubyanka hit operation was underway, says journalist Christo Grozev, a leading expert at the British Internet investigative bureau Bellingcat.
Kiev's military intelligence officers "tried to recruit Russian military pilots for a monetary reward and a guarantee of obtaining citizenship of one of the EU countries," said the FSB, once headed by Putin. Reports say that Russian pilots could have made $2 million (USD) for defecting in their military aircraft.
Putin's security services claimed to have intercepted text and voice communications between "an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine" and "a Russian pilot". The plan allowed advance payments of $4,000 in an attempt to persuade a Russian pilot to fly his Su-24, Su-34 or Tu-22MZ in Ukraine, giving Kiev a major propaganda coup. The Tu-22M3 is a strategic nuclear bomber.
The money was transferred by female couriers, who were allegedly arrested in the Russian city of Kazan. Passports from Romania and Slovenia were prepared for a pilot's girlfriend, guaranteeing them a future in Europe, it has been claimed. But Grozev – accused by the Russians of involvement in the alleged Ukrainian-British conspiracy – has a different account.
"Using a traditional mix of falsified 'evidence' and loosely interpreted facts, the FSB ... accused me personally of being involved in the hijacking plot," he claimed, saying a message from him to a number on The United Kingdom was completely false.
What is true, however, is that I have been involved in this crazier-than-fiction story of triple agents, fake passports and fake girlfriends – as a documentary filmmaker. Yes, we are describing one of the strangest counterintelligence operations of all time…. While Russia is today presenting this as a coup for its counterintelligence, in fact the operation was a serious blunder for the FSB, inadvertently revealing the identities of dozens of counterintelligence officers, their methods of operation and assets their secret" - he said.
He promised to reveal all when the documentary airs. But he said: "In April, Ukraine passed an 'arms-surrender-incentives law.' A team of Ukrainian operatives decided to approach Russian pilots with an offer based on this law. We found out about the initiative and secured a front seat – to make a documentary about this operation. Several Russian military pilots were approached and even sent "proof of access" videos from inside their planes, in each case with a unique number handwritten on pieces of paper. Some of the views from inside the planes were quite detailed and illuminating. Note that the FSB is now presenting these videos as 'controlled leaks' – while at the same time blurring the inside of the TV booth.
The 'negotiations' between the Ukrainian recruiters and the pilots, which we filmed, began as expected, but their tone quickly changed, suggesting that the pilots were no longer speaking for themselves, but had been 'coached' – likely by the military desk of the FSB. A clear clue that the FSB had intercepted communications came when one of the pilots suddenly said that he no longer wanted to take his girlfriend out of the country, but his "mistress". It took me about five minutes to find out that the pilot's "lover" (sooo hot for him, FSB) was an FSB asset, working as a fitness trainer by day but being used as a girlfriend for rent of the FSB- for the rest of the time. The Ukrainian secret services were also aware of this," he said.
FSB deri atëherë e kuptoi se ata ishin ‘djegur’.
A Ukrainian intelligence officer allegedly told a would-be defecting pilot: “I gave you a way. So you will be flying out of populated areas. The Russians say this gave them useful information for the defense of Ukraine. Among the secrets revealed were air defense zones in southeastern Ukraine, charts of airfields in the Khmelnytskyi and Chernihiv regions, altitude maps and locations of the largest concentration of units with portable anti-aircraft missile systems," reported the Zvezda TV channel, controlled by Russian Ministry of Defense.
