Turkish police on Wednesday arrested the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, a prominent opposition leader and the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan .

According to Turkish authorities, the arrest came as part of an investigation into suspected links to several corruption scandals, as well as investigations into links to terrorist groups.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported that prosecutors issued arrest warrants for Imamoglu and about 100 other people, including businessmen and journalists.

Government critics say Imamoglu's arrest follows significant losses for Erdogan's ruling party in local elections in March. Anti-government analysts say Imamoglu was arrested to weaken the opposition so it doesn't call for early elections.

The arrest occurred during a search of Imamoglu's home, but no further details have been provided so far.

The mayor's wife confirmed to a private television station that police had arrived at their home before dawn and that the arrest had taken place at around 7:30 a.m.

A day earlier, a university revoked the degree awarded to Imamoglu 30 years ago, disqualifying him from running in the upcoming presidential race.

Under Turkish law, being in possession of a university degree is a necessary condition for running in elections.

Imamoglu's party, the country's main opposition Republican People's Party, had planned to hold "primaries" on Sunday, where he was expected to be chosen as the lead candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Turkey's presidential elections are scheduled for 2028, however, early elections are also possible.

Many analysts believe that İmamoğlu's rise in the polls has worried Erdogan's government, which is using repressive means to remove a potential rival from the race.
