Two months after the US military operation that led to the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro , the United States and Venezuela have agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations, severed since 2019.

The news was announced by the US State Department.

According to the official statement, Washington and the interim authorities in Caracas have reached an agreement to resume diplomatic contacts with the aim of facilitating joint efforts for stability and economic recovery in the Latin American country.

The State Department emphasized that the restoration of relations also aims to help advance political reconciliation and create the conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government in Venezuela.

Relations between the two countries were severed in 2019 after Washington supported opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president, while Maduro's government severed diplomatic ties with the US.

The normalization of relations comes after recent political developments in Venezuela, where after Maduro's capture by US forces in early 2026, former Vice President Delcy Rodríguez took over the country's interim leadership, and has begun dialogue with Washington for a new phase of cooperation.
