Qatar shoots down two Iranian bombers that were about to strike US base

A major Iranian attack on a US base in Qatar, where at least 10,000 American troops were stationed, was reportedly averted at the last minute. As CNN reports, on Monday morning – as Iran was retaliating after US and Israeli attacks – two Iranian Su-24 bombers took off to strike the US al-Udeid base and the major Ras Laffan natural gas facility in Qatar.

According to the report, the aim was to hit these strategic locations, while the aircraft arrived just two minutes away, according to information from sources informed about the operation.

They were shot down by a Qatari fighter jet.

The Iranian planes were visually identified and photographed carrying bombs and guided munitions, while the Qatari air force issued a radio warning, but received no response. The Iranian planes descended to an altitude of 80 meters to avoid radar detection, which led the Qatari air force to consider them hostile and shoot them down.

According to sources, a Qatari F-15 fighter jet intercepted the Iranian Su-24 jets after a dogfight. The wreckage of the aircraft ended up in Qatari waters, while searches are ongoing to find the crew.

It was the first time Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps has used manned aircraft to attack a neighboring country since the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, when Iranian attacks had previously been carried out with missiles and drones. It was also the first time Qatar's air force was involved in heavy combat, underscoring the escalating tension in the region.

For his part, US General Dan Kane confirmed the incident at a press conference, stressing that it was the first time that Qatari pilots had shot down Iranian bombers en route to the al-Udeid base.

In a phone call with the Iranian Foreign Minister, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani accused Iran of trying to cause harm to its neighbors by dragging Qatar into a war that does not affect it.

The incident follows a series of Iranian missile and drone attacks on Gulf Arab states, as Iran continues to respond to US and Israeli airstrikes on its territory. Although most of the attacks have been intercepted, several US soldiers were killed by Iranian missiles that managed to penetrate air defenses and hit a unit in Kuwait.
