Kristi Noem, former South Dakota governor and former congresswoman, has been fired from her position as head of the Department of Homeland Security during President Donald Trump's second term.
Trump announced her departure on his Truth Social platform, where he also announced that he intends to nominate Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin as his successor. Until a new appointment is confirmed, the position is expected to be filled by Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar, a former US Navy officer and former mayor of Los Alamitos, California.
During her time at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security, Noem focused on implementing much tougher policies in the field of immigration, changing the approach of the previous administration led by Alejandro Mayorkas during the presidency of Joe Biden.
According to data published by the administration, during the first year of its mandate, more than 500,000 pounds of illegal drugs were seized, while during 2025, about two million cases of self-deportation were registered and approximately 670,000 illegal immigrants left the United States.
Its supporters have described the operation as one of the largest immigration enforcement campaigns in the country's history.
However, her actions and policies have drawn strong criticism from Democratic Party figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, Congressman Eric Swalwell, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Congressional candidate David Trone.
Criticism has focused particularly on mass deportation operations and the operation of a detention center for immigrants in Williamsport.
During a congressional hearing, Noem also faced tough questions about a taxpayer-funded advertising contract and allegations of an alleged relationship with former Trump campaign strategist Corey Lewandowski.
The questions were raised by Democratic congressmen Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Jared Moskowitz, while Noem dismissed the allegations as tabloid slander.
Despite the controversy, many Republicans have supported her work. Congressman Clay Higgins stated that she took charge of a very serious situation at the border and managed to turn it around, noting that during her term there has been a decrease of about 97 percent in illegal crossings at the southern border of the United States, writes Fox News.
