The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has announced that she has asked the Assembly to make constitutional changes to enable the election of the country's president through popular vote.
"Given the successive failures in electing the President, I have just submitted to the Assembly the constitutional amendments for direct elections of the President, which were drafted by the Commission for Amending the Constitution in 2011," Osmani wrote.
She called on all political parties to vote for these constitutional amendments.
"From now on, let the people speak," Osmani wrote on Facebook.
According to the Constitution, the President of Kosovo is elected by the Assembly through a secret ballot of deputies.
Osmani's call comes after political parties failed to reach an agreement on a consensual president and Osmani did not find their support for a second term.
