A Russian tanker carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea after explosions and a large fire on board. Russia accuses Ukraine of carrying out the attack using unmanned naval drones.
The Arctic Metagaz ship, carrying about 62,000 tons of gas, was hit by explosions and then engulfed in flames before sinking about 130 nautical miles north of the Libyan port of Sirte, between Libya and Malta.
According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, there were 30 Russian citizens on board, who were rescued by the Maltese armed forces and all found safe in a lifeboat.
Russia's accusations
Russia claims the tanker was attacked by Ukrainian naval drones launched from the Libyan coast. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident a "terrorist act," while Moscow described it as international terrorism and maritime piracy.
However, Russian authorities have not presented evidence for these claims.
Ukraine's reaction
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has not commented directly on the allegations. Libyan port authorities also said the cause of the fire remains unclear.
Unverified footage circulating on social media shows the ship on fire overnight, while a Ukrainian blogger claimed the tanker had suffered extensive damage to the engine room.
Part of the "shadow fleet"
The tanker had set sail from the Russian port of Murmansk and was believed to be en route to Port Said in Egypt. It is considered part of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet," used to transport oil and gas to evade Western sanctions after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Since the start of the war, Ukraine has carried out several naval drone attacks on Russian ships, but most of them have occurred in the Black Sea, not the Mediterranean.
