NATO chief Mark Rutte has proposed to alliance members to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP and spend another 1.5% on other defense-related items, to meet Donald Trump's demand for a 5% target, Reuters reports.
Rutte's proposal could allow the US president to claim this as a victory at the NATO summit in The Hague in June, while not committing European countries and Canada to a 5% pledge for core defense spending, which many see as politically and economically unsustainable.
