The Serbian government has approved a contract with Jared Kushner for the construction of luxury hotels on the site of the former Ministry of Defense building in Belgrade.

The New York Times writes that the $500 million project is being pursued by Richard Grenell. Former US envoy to the Balkans, Grenell made the proposal to develop the bombed former Yugoslavia building while still serving as a diplomat.

The deal, which provoked protests in Belgrade on Thursday, is carried out with an affiliate of Kushner's Affinity Partners, with a budget of $3 billion and backed by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund.

"The government of Serbia has chosen a reputable American company as a partner in this venture, which will invest in the revitalization of the former Federal Secretariat for National Defense complex," a Serbian government official said in a statement released Wednesday.

The complex was bombed in 1999 by NATO forces with the support of the United States during the war that Serbia was waging at the time with Kosovo. It is now considered a prime piece of undeveloped real estate in the middle of a much-changing city, and Trump himself considered building a hotel on the same site in 2013.

For Kushner, who is also planning two luxury hotel projects in Albania, these deals in the Balkans are among the biggest he has made since starting his investment firm.

So Kushner gets into business as Donald Trump is expected to return as US president, while his close friend, and a strong voice and ardent advocate of the Serbs, Grenell is reported to be the next DASH Secretary.
