Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Federal Security Service to increase surveillance of the state border, using all available means to prevent threats from abroad and traitors at home. Speaking at the Security Services Day, Putin said the emergence of new threats increases the need for greater intelligence activity.

"The state border is the most important, key point in the country's security, so it must be protected and any attempt to violate it must be thwarted quickly and effectively using the forces and means at our disposal, including mobile action units and special forces ".

Hampered not only by the Ukrainian counteroffensive that has pushed the Russians back from occupied territories, but also by numerous acts of sabotage in Russia allegedly carried out by Kiev's secret services, Putin ordered the FSB intelligence agency to increase vigilance, especially at the border. He described the difficult situation of the Russians in the self-proclaimed regions and demanded a guarantee of their security from the FSB.

"The situation in the (self-proclaimed) People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk and in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions is extremely difficult. But the people who live there, Russian citizens, hope for you, for your protection. It is your duty to do whatever is necessary to ensure their safety and to respect their rights and freedoms as much as possible. For our part, we will continue to strengthen the new forces with military equipment, weapons and experienced personnel," said Putin.

The head of the Kremlin instructed the FSB to maximize the use of operational, technical and personnel potential to strengthen control over society, as well as maintain composure to detect traitors.

"Maximum composure and concentration of forces is now required from counterintelligence agencies, including military intelligence. We must strongly confront the actions of foreign special services and quickly identify traitors, spies and saboteurs."

The FSB, headed by Putin ally Alexander Bortnikov, will also increase surveillance of mass gatherings, strategic facilities and energy infrastructure.
