The FBI has arrested an Afghan man who was planning an election day attack targeting large crowds in the United States, the Justice Department said Tuesday. Authorities said the suspect was inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group.
27-year-old Afghan Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi of Oklahoma City told investigators after his arrest Monday that he had planned his attack to coincide with Election Day next month and that he and a minor accomplice would die as martyrs, according to indictment documents.
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, who entered the United States in 2021 on a special immigration visa, had taken steps in recent weeks to advance his attack plans, including ordering AK-47 rifles, selling assets of his family and buying tickets for his wife and child to travel to Afghanistan.
"Terrorism remains the FBI's top priority, and we will use every resource to protect the American people," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.
According to the Department of Justice, after his arrest, Nasir Ahmad Tauhedi told investigators that he had planned an election day attack that would target large groups of people.
Nasir Ahmad Tauhedi was charged with conspiracy and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State, which the United States has designated as a terrorist organization.
It was not immediately clear if he had a defense attorney who could speak on his behalf./VOA
