Earth's 'vital signs' point to humanity's future hanging in the balance, climate experts say

Many of Earth's "vital signs" have reached record extremes, showing that "the future of humanity hangs in the balance", a group of the world's most senior climate experts has said.

The temperature of the Earth's surface and oceans reached an all-time high, driven by record burning of fossil fuels, the report found. The human population is growing at a rate of about 200,000 people per day and the number of cattle and sheep at 170,000 per day, all adding to record greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists identified 28 signs, including increased emissions from melting permafrost, that could cause environmental catastrophes such as the collapse of the Greenland ice sheet.

Global warming is causing increasingly deadly extreme weather around the world, they said, including hurricanes in the US and 50C heat waves in India, with billions of people now exposed to extreme heat.

The scientists said their goal was "to provide clear, evidence-based insights that inspire informed and courageous responses from citizens to researchers and world leaders - we just want to act truthfully and tell it like it is." Decisive and swift action is needed, they said, to limit human suffering, including by reducing fossil fuel burning and methane emissions, reducing excess consumption and waste by the affluent, and encouraging a shift to food-based plant.

"We are already in the midst of sudden climate upheaval, which threatens life on Earth like nothing humans have ever seen," said Prof William Ripple, at Oregon State University (OSU), US, who co-led the group. "Ecological overshooting—taking more than Earth can safely give—has pushed the planet into climate conditions more threatening than anything witnessed even by our prehistoric relatives."

"Climate change has already displaced millions of people, with the potential to displace hundreds of millions or even billions," he said. "This is likely to lead to greater geopolitical instability, perhaps even partial societal collapse."
