The mayor of Cotija, Mexico, Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, was shot dead on Monday evening, a day after Claudia Sheinbaum's triumphant victory in the country's presidential election.

According to local media, strangers ambushed Figueroa as she entered a gym with her bodyguard.

According to the same sources, the mayor was injured during the exchange of shots, she was taken to the hospital where she died a little later.

Figueroa was kidnapped in September 2023 in the city of Zapopan, when gunmen ambushed her car while she was driving unaccompanied.

At the time, in fact, it was revealed that one of the criminal organizations active in Mexico had threatened Figueroa with death before her abduction.
