The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, is in critical condition after a gunshot attack today immediately after the government meeting near Bratislava.

Fico is reported to have been shot with four bullets, one of them life-threatening, in the abdomen and chest.

"Today there was an attempt to kill R. Fico. He was shot several times and is currently in danger for his life. At the moment he is being transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, as the road to Bratislava would take too long. Due to the need for urgent surgery, the next few hours will be decisive," says an official message on the Prime Minister's Facebook page.

The perpetrator of the gun attack is a 71-year-old man who was arrested at the scene, while the motives are still unknown.
