Two employees of the Israeli embassy in the US have been shot dead outside the Jewish Museum of the Capital in Washington, D.C., as they were leaving an event focused on helping the people of Gaza. The victims, a couple, were part of an event organized by the Jewish community.
The suspect in the attack has been identified as Elias Rodriguez, 30, who was arrested by police shortly after the attack. Authorities say Rodriguez shouted "Free Palestine" as he was arrested, and are investigating his possible links to terrorism.
The Israeli embassy reacted immediately after the incident, stating that the victims were shot at close range. Embassy spokeswoman Tal Naim Cohen said in a post on the X platform that she has full confidence in the American authorities to clarify the incident and bring justice.
“Two members of the Israeli embassy staff were shot at close range tonight while attending a Jewish event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. We have full confidence in law enforcement authorities, both local and federal, to apprehend the perpetrator and protect representatives of Israel and the Jewish community in the United States,” she wrote.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reacted strongly, calling it a "horrific anti-Semitic act."
In an official post on the X platform, the prime minister's office announced that Netanyahu had held talks with the Israeli ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, and with US Attorney General Pam Bondi, demanding that the incident be treated with the utmost seriousness.
“We are witnessing the terrible price of anti-Semitism and vicious incitement against the State of Israel,” the statement said. “Bloody slander against Israel is being multiplied with blood and must be fought to the end.”
Netanyahu also announced that security measures for Israeli embassies and diplomatic representatives around the world would be immediately strengthened in response to the incident.
