Kurti: We are preparing for Serbia to be accused of war crimes
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the authorities are preparing for Serbia to be accused of the crimes committed during the war in Kosovo.

Kurti asked the State Prosecutor's Office to work to the maximum so that the persons responsible for crimes during the war, for which there are living witnesses, are prosecuted and punished.

"Even the Ministry of Justice and my legal advisers, together with international experts, are making preparations to accuse Serbia as the state responsible for the crimes committed during the war in Kosovo, which are war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide," he said. Kurti during the tributes in Drenas, adding that this process is continuing and when there is something concrete, the public will be notified in time.

Kurti had stated earlier that Kosovo intends to sue Serbia for genocide, for the period of the last war in the country. In 2021, he had stated that such a lawsuit would be brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

However, experts in international affairs had previously told Radio Free Europe that only countries that are members of the United Nations Organization, of which it is a part, can apply to the ICJ. Therefore, some of them had said that Kosovo could raise such a case before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICJ, based in The Hague, decides on disputes between states, while the ICC prosecutes individuals for war crimes.

The decisions of the ICJ are final and cannot be appealed, but the court has little power to enforce them.

Otherwise, according to the Fund for Humanitarian Law, in the last war in Kosovo in 1998/99, around 13,500 people were killed. /Radio Free Europe
