Incident in the English Channel, Russian frigate fires at a British yacht. London launches investigation

A Russian warship has fired at a British-flagged civilian vessel in the English Channel. The frigate's crew fired warning shots at the civilian yacht, which had come within 500 meters of the military ship.

The British Ministry of Defense said it had received a report of the incident. "We are investigating reports of an incident in the English Channel," a ministry spokesman said, as reported by Sky News.

According to British media, the incident occurred about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters. There are no reports of injuries or damage to the yacht. Authorities believe this should be considered an isolated incident.

This episode follows a climate of high tension between London and Moscow, after on Sunday British commandos boarded and blocked in the English Channel a Russian oil tanker of the "shadow fleet", called Smyrtos, which was under the sanctions regime.

This was the first operation of its kind aimed at cutting off Russia's oil revenues, which are being used to finance the war in Ukraine. The oil tanker has been seized by London authorities.

In a separate statement released on Monday, the Royal Navy said two British ships had been following the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich in the English Channel, west of Brest in France.
