Donald Trump softens, now calls Macron a special "friend"

The bilateral meeting between Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron seems to have started well.

"Emmanuel has been a special friend of mine. We've had a fantastic relationship. We've worked together on many deals," Trump told Macron to reporters in Évian.

"I want to thank you for your help. You have always been a help," he added.

The US president also spoke about the UFC fight night he hosted at the White House on Sunday, as part of his country's 250th anniversary celebrations.

"I called last night, very late last night, to congratulate you because in the heavyweight division, the French fighter won. I don't know, is this maybe more important than the World Cup? For some people, it might be," Trump told Macron, who laughed.

"You have a good team in the World Cup, a very good team. But you also have good fighters. And you are a great country, and it is an honor to be with you. Thank you very much."
