Mayor of a city in Mexico assassinated

The mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán, a town of about 7,000 people in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, has been killed by gunmen in an attack that has shocked the country.

According to the Oaxaca prosecutor's office, Joel Angel Bravo Martinez lost his life after an "armed attack," while authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances of the incident.

The governor of Oaxaca, Salomon Jara, strongly condemned the mayor's killing, calling it a "cowardly murder." In a reaction on social media, he stressed that authorities will not allow violence to prevail over the law and the will of citizens.

Following the attack, police have increased security measures in the area, while local and federal forces have launched joint operations to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

The state of Oaxaca has for years been one of the areas where powerful drug cartels operate, including the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which fight for control of trafficking routes.

Bravo Martinez's killing is part of a series of attacks on local officials in Mexico. According to records, since 2006, when the Mexican government declared war on drug cartels, nearly 100 mayors have been killed in the country. One of the most recent cases was that of Mayor Carlos Manzo in the state of Michoacán, an event that sparked protests and strong reactions across Mexico.
