Technical defect on the Pope's plane, the Holy Father returns to Rome on King Felipe's private plane

A technical problem on the plane that was to take Pope Leo XIV from Tenerife to Rome forced the Holy Father to disembark shortly before departure.

Due to the defect, King Felipe VI of Spain decided to make his private plane available to the Pope for the return to Italy.

The incident occurred at Tenerife airport, at the end of the Pope's visit to Spain. After spending more than an hour on board waiting for the problem to be resolved, Pope Leo XIV left the plane accompanied by King Felipe, who escorted him to the airport's VIP lounge.

The flight commander informed passengers that a problem had been detected in one of the aircraft's systems. According to him, the technical team was working to identify and repair the defect. It was later revealed that the pilots had noticed that one of the engines was not operating according to normal parameters during takeoff procedures.

The aircraft involved in the incident was an Airbus A320 of the airline Iberia, with the registration EC-MDK.

Maintenance specialists suggested that the aircraft be towed and positioned upwind to attempt a new engine start, as the problem could have been caused by wind conditions at the time of takeoff.

Flight IB1477 was scheduled to depart at 15:20 local time and arrive at Rome airport after a journey of more than four hours. However, Iberia confirmed that the technical fault could not be repaired immediately and that all passengers were forced to disembark.

In an official statement, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will return to Rome on the King of Spain's plane, a gesture considered a sign of friendship and respect by the Spanish royal family. The plane was expected to depart at around 6:00 p.m. local time and arrive in Rome around 11:00 p.m.
