Pope Leo XIV blesses the tallest tower of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

Pope Leo XIV has inaugurated the newest tower of the famous Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, ??crowning a historic moment for the modernist masterpiece designed by architect Antoni Gaudi.

After celebrating Mass in the basilica, the Pope blessed the Tower of Jesus Christ, which at 172.5 meters is now the tallest part of the complex and makes the Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world. The tower ends with a five-story ceramic cross, visible from most of Barcelona.

The ceremony was accompanied by a light show inside and outside the basilica, as well as fireworks that marked the end of the celebrations.

The event coincides with the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí's death and constitutes one of the main moments of Pope Leo XIV's week-long visit to Spain.

During this visit, the Holy Father expressed concern about the growing conflicts in the world, warning that they are pushing humanity towards a deep crisis.

This is the third visit by a pope to the Sagrada Familia. It also comes a year after the Vatican approved a significant step in the process of canonizing Antoni Gaudí.

Born in 1852, Gaudí was a devout Catholic who worked for more than 40 years on the construction of the Sagrada Familia, from 1883 until his tragic death in a tram accident in 1926.
