The Greek government has announced tougher new measures against illegal immigration, planning to eliminate a rule that allowed irregular migrants to apply for a residence permit after seven years of residence in the country.

Migration Minister Makis Voridis declared that this provision has been abused and that from now on "no one who is illegally in Greece will ever be legalized."

He stressed that around 55-65,000 immigrants enter illegally each year, half of whom are granted asylum.

The new bill, approved by the cabinet and expected to pass through Parliament in June, provides for prison sentences of up to five years for illegal entry and stay.

Also, pre-deportation detention will be extended to two years from the current maximum of 18 months.

In 2024, Greek police arrested 74,000 irregular migrants but managed to deport only 2,500. The minister said many of them claim false identities to delay the deportation process.

Meanwhile, to meet economic needs and a labor shortage, around 200,000 workers according to the Bank of Greece, the government will present by July new regulations encouraging legal immigration.
