The Court of Justice in Brazil has given the extreme sentence to a former high official, after she is accused of persuading her children to kill their father

According to foreign media, the 61-year-old former deputy Flordelís dos Santos and her pastor husband Anderson do Carmo had gained fame in Brazil for adopting children from the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Some of the couple's 55 biological and adopted children have been charged with plotting to kill the pastor.

The daughter of the former deputy was sentenced to 31 years in prison for the murder of her father, while her son was also sentenced to 33 years in prison as an accomplice in crime (he was the victim's stepfather).

The murder of the pastor

The case has shocked Brazil since June 16, 2019, when Do Carmo was found dead early in the morning outside the couple's home in Rio de Janeiro. Former congresswoman dos Santos claimed at the time that armed robbers on motorcycles had followed and attacked her husband.

But police investigations later implicated dos Santos in her husband's murder in collaboration with some of their children.

Brazilian prosecutors accused him of "orchestrating the murder by convincing children to take part in the crime and trying to present it as an armed robbery".
