Israeli attacks in Gaza: Media report 80 victims, among them 9 out of 10

Nearly 80 people have been killed in the latest round of Israeli attacks in Gaza, a death toll that does not include hospitals in the hit north that the Hamas-led Ministry of Health said are now out of reach.

The deaths over the past 24 hours included nine out of 10 of a doctor's children, shocked colleagues and the Ministry of Health said.

Alaa Najjar, a pediatrician at Nasser Hospital, was on duty at the time and ran home to find her family's home in flames, Ahmad al-Farra, head of the hospital's pediatric department, told the Associated Press.

Najjar's husband was seriously injured and their only surviving child, an 11-year-old boy, was in critical condition after Friday's attack in the southern city of Khan Younis, Farra said.

The dead children ranged in age from seven months to 12 years old. Khalil Al-Dokran, a spokesman for Gaza's Ministry of Health, told the AP that two of the children remained under the rubble.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it hit the suspects operating from a structure near its forces and described the Khan Younis area as a "dangerous war zone". They said they had evacuated civilians from the area and "the allegation regarding the injury to uninvolved civilians is being investigated". Earlier on Saturday, a statement said Israel's air force struck over 100 targets across Gaza over the past day.

Health officials in Gaza, who make no distinction between civilians and fighters, said the new deaths bring the death toll of the war to 53,901 since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 that sparked 19 months of fighting. The ministry said more than 3,700 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed fighting in March to put pressure on Hamas to accept various ceasefire terms and release the remaining hostages.
