German Chancellor Merz: Kosovo is of vital importance for us and NATO

Just two weeks after he became chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz and his government made a decision directly related to Kosovo.

The executive in Berlin extended the participation of the German Army in the framework of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, which has been operating here for 26 years now.

Since the liberation of the country and the withdrawal of Serbian forces on June 14, 1999, KFOR has held a peacekeeping mandate and is now the third responsibility for security.

The spokesperson of the German Government, Stefan Kornelius, told Klan Kosova that a stable and peaceful Kosovo is of essential importance for Germany, NATO and the whole of Europe.

"Here too, the German contribution remains unchanged; As with the personnel we have at the KFOR base, it is an element of national support – where there is a company on the mission – as well as with the position of director in the NATO Liaison and Advisory team", Kornelius told Info Magazine in Klan Kosova.

The government's decision must now be approved by the German Parliament, Bundestag, and the spokesperson gave strong facts about the historical weight of German participation in KFOR.

"Since 1999, our Bundeswehr Army has been actively involved in the KFOR mission to stabilize and ensure peace in Kosovo. The security situation in northern Kosovo, despite ongoing political tensions, has recently stabilized.

At the moment, short-term deteriorations are possible. Therefore, it is important that KFOR further contributes to the improvement of the security situation in Kosovo and the Western Balkans", he said.

In addition to the western Balkans, the German republic is also taking on a key military role in other parts of Europe.

This week, Chancellor Merz, together with the Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius, stayed in Lithuania, where 5000 German soldiers will be deployed on the borders of this country with Russia and Belarus.

This will be, as Germany's top officials said, after Kosovo, the second major deployment of this country's troops to another country, since the end of World War II.

And with the deployment of this brigade on the Eastern flank of NATO, according to them, every palm of the Alliance's land is protected.

Merz himself said that the time when someone in Germany had illusions about Vladimir Putin's regime, which has been attacking its neighbor, Ukraine, for three years now, is over.
