A shocking case has come to light in Milan, where gastroenterologist and mayor of Rivolta d'Adda (Cremona), Giovanni Sgroi, 70, has been placed under house arrest on charges of aggravated sexual violence against four patients.

The investigations were conducted by the Carabinieri and coordinated by the Milan Prosecutor's Office, following a complaint made in May 2024 by a 24-year-old patient. During the investigation, through telephone interceptions, forensic analysis and other research, three other victims, aged 34, 36 and 43, were identified.

Abuses during medical check-ups

According to the reconstruction made by prosecutor Letizia Mannella and her colleague Alessia Menegazzo, the abuses allegedly occurred during abdominal ultrasound examinations at the Pozzuolo Martesana Specialist Medical Center, a private facility where Sgroi practiced and held the position of medical director.

According to the investigative file, the doctor is suspected of using his position to commit acts of a sexual nature, turning the medical act into a means of violating the physical and psychological integrity of patients. He used a repeated "modus operandi", where he mixed professional questions with personal questions without any medical basis, and unexpectedly committed unacceptable acts towards patients.

Disturbing words and repetitive behaviors

In one of the cases, according to evidence included in the arrest warrant, after suspected abuse of a young patient, Sgroi addressed the center's secretary with the words: "Give the little one a discount," adding even more weight to the suspicions about his attitude towards the victims.

Risk of reoffending

Investigating judge Sara Cipolla, who signed the house arrest measure, estimates that there is a real risk of evidence manipulation and the possibility that the doctor will commit other similar crimes if released. We recall that Sgroi was previously investigated by the Bergamo Prosecutor's Office in 2010, but the case was closed then without criminal consequences.

Other victims suspected – authorities call for denunciation

Considering the high number of patients who have passed through the hands of the doctor during his years of practice, investigators do not rule out the possibility of other victims. Authorities have made a public appeal for denunciations if there are other people who may have been victims of similar behavior by Giovanni Sgroi.
