Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, renowned for his dramatic black-and-white photographs of the Amazon, has died at the age of 81.

His death was confirmed by Instituto Terra, the non-profit environmental restoration organization he founded with his wife of six decades, Lélia Wanick Salgado. In an Instagram post, the institute described Salgado as "much more than one of the greatest photographers of our time."

The French Academy of Fine Arts, of which Salgado was a member, described him as a "great witness to the human condition and the state of the planet."

"I know I won't live much longer," Salgado said in an interview last year. "But I don't want to live much longer. I've lived so long and seen so many things."

Salgado lived in Paris for many years and began dedicating himself fully to photography in 1973, years after his graduation in economics.

His style is characterized by black and white images, rich tonality, and emotionally charged scenarios. Poor communities were among his main interests.

Among his major works are the recent series “Amazonia”; “Workers” which shows hard labor around the world; and “Exodus” (also known as “Migration” or “Sahel”) which documents people in transit, including refugees and slum dwellers.

Together with his wife, Salgado is widely known online as the couple who planted 4 million trees in 18 years, forming a giant forest massif in a deforested area of Brazil.
