Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared that he will not run for another presidential term, paving the way for a new political era in the country.

In a statement released by the state-run Anadolu agency, Erdogan stressed the need for a new constitution, calling the current document an obstacle to Turkey's democratic development.

"I have no intention of running for president again. Our only goal is to improve the reputation of our country. Turkey is changing, the world is changing... We need a constitution proposed by civilians, not by putschists," Erdogan said.

Erdogan's statement marks a historic moment, as he has been the dominant figure in Turkish politics for more than two decades, leading the country as prime minister and then president since 2003.

He was re-elected for a third term in 2023 and is expected to remain in office until 2028.

However, the Turkish opposition remains skeptical.

According to her, efforts to amend the constitution could be used to further consolidate executive power, rather than guaranteeing a balanced separation of powers.

Analysts warn that any constitutional process will be fraught with political tensions and will require broad consensus.
