Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti , has dismissed one of his deputy ministers, a day after he said on television that international diplomats had "incited unrest" in the north of the country.
Kurti's office announced on Friday that Deputy Minister of Local Government Administration, Arbër Vokrri, has been relieved of his duties.
Speaking on KTV on Thursday evening, Vokrri said that one of the international diplomats "who has incited unrest" was the head of the European Union Office in Kosovo, Aivo Orav.
Kurti's office stressed that the decision to dismiss comes "following his statements that international diplomats and representatives of international institutions, naming them by name,
The Head of the EU Office in Kosovo, Ambassador Aivo Orav, has incited unrest in the north of the country through his actions.
She said that Vokrri's statements do not represent the positions of the Government of Kosovo.
Tensions in northern Kosovo, inhabited by a Serb majority, have been high in recent years.
They increased in 2022 after the decision of the Kosovo authorities to replace Serbian car license plates with Kosovo license plates, after which Serbian mayors and other community officials resigned from Kosovo institutions in this part of the country.
Tensions peaked in September 2023 when the Kosovo Police were attacked by a group of armed Serbs in Zvecan, where a sergeant and three attackers were killed.
Since then, Kosovo authorities have closed dozens of parallel Serbian institutions in an attempt to extend their authority to that part of the country./ REL
