In Russia, the presidential election is under way, which is expected to extend President Vladimir Putin's rule for another six years. The election is fictitious, as President Putin's political opponents are in prison, in exile and his fiercest opponent, Alexei Navalny, died in prison.

After his death many questions were raised over the future of opposition action in Russia. Navalny's team says it will continue its efforts against the rule of The Russian president, and a strong test is expected to be the protest next week, with the chant "Nosdita against Putin."

Following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died suddenly in an Arctic prison last month, his team faces a challenge: Keeping the opposition movement alive against President Vladimir Putin under the former leader's example.

A key test is expected to be marked on Sunday, the last day Russians can vote for a presidential election, widely seen as more of a formality than a vote for democracy.

Navalny's team is urging Russians to flop to the polls on Sunday at noon to show their distaste for Putin's rule and the war launched by him against Ukraine.

The rally was called "Mid-Day Against Putin" by Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya.

Navalny's supporters have expressed different views on the opposition action.

"With Navalny's death it seems that everything was destroyed. Although his wife, Julia, took his action on the shoulders, I don't think it will be the same as alexei's time. "I doubt that russia will get better," says Valery, a resident in Moscow.

"The fact that so many people showed up at his funeral, for me, was unexpected because I thought everything was dead in Russia. But when I saw the turnout, so many people, I realized I didn't know everything," said Maria, a resident in Moscow.

Just days after her husband's death, Navalnaya expressed her resolve to continue his mission.

Last month, she spoke at the European Parliament, met with U.S. President Joe Biden and urged Western countries not to recognize the results of the Russian election. It also called on the West to impose more sanctions on people who are skilled with the Russian president.

Navalny himself avoided trying to build relationships with Western governments because he thought it was a battle to be won in Russia. And I think he was a little bit worried that this would be a stain on the opposition, might make it look like a Western project. In the current situation, I think people will assess whether to continue to follow this principle or not," said Sam Greene, director of the Centre for European Policy Analysis.

Ahead of the election, Navalny's team called on supporters to vote for any candidate other than Putin, or make the ballot invalid. Experts say Sunday's protest will be a test of the influence they can exert on Russia, opposition abroad.

/VOA
