The President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, and his wife, Llidija, received death threats on the social network, Twitter, on Friday. The Montenegrin police told Radio Free Europe that they are dealing with this case, while the Basic State Prosecutor's Office gave an order to investigate who made the threat from the Twitter account.

The threats, which link Djukanovic's fate to that of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, were sent by an account named Boris Jankovic. The post was accompanied by a photograph of Mussolini's execution. Djukanovic is the candidate of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) in the presidential elections in Montenegro, which will be held on March 19.

On Wednesday, death threats were also sent from the same Twitter account to MP Draginja Vuksanović Stanković, who is also running in the presidential elections. Vuksanovic Stankovic reported the threats to the police, law enforcement officials confirmed to Radio Free Europe.

"Threats are considered a criminal offense of jeopardizing security and the responsible prosecution is notified of everything," said the Police of Montenegro.
Over the past year, Vuksanovic Stankovic has repeatedly received threats, therefore, from mid-2022, he is under 24-hour police protection. Vuksanovic Stankovic said that the threats she receives are politically motivated and will not stop her from political activities, including the presidential campaign.

The Prime Minister with a technical mandate of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic, condemned the threats against Djukanovic and Vuksanovic Stankovic, saying that they should be taken seriously. He said there was no reason to panic, but called on the police and prosecutors to investigate any threats.

In the March 19 elections in Montenegro, seven candidates will compete for the presidency. The current president, Djukanovic, took office in 2018. He also served as president in the period 1997-2003./ REL
