US Department releases Epstein files containing allegations against Trump

The United States Department of Justice has released previously unseen documents from the files of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including interviews and notes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with a South Carolina woman who made allegations against Epstein and US President Donald Trump, NBC reported.

The woman alleged in interviews in 2019 that Epstein sexually assaulted her, while accusing Trump of assaulting her in the 1980s, when she was between 13 and 15 years old. The interviews also allege that Epstein blackmailed her mother and that she received threats over the years that she believed were made by Epstein. The FBI documented allegations of transportation to New York or New Jersey and alleged incidents in “a very high-rise building with large rooms.”

The woman first contacted federal authorities shortly after Epstein's arrest in 2019, and the FBI deemed her allegations serious enough to question her in three more interviews. The fourth interview was cut short. The new documents do not contain any information on assessing the credibility of her claims. The U.S. Justice Department had previously removed 47,635 files from the internet for review and redaction, including victim information and sexual material, and on Thursday released the files that had been mistakenly coded as copies.

The White House has repeatedly referred to previous Justice Department statements that some of the documents contained sensational and unsubstantiated allegations against Trump, and that authorities have not charged Trump with any wrongdoing related to Epstein. The woman filed a lawsuit against Epstein in 2019, which ended with a voluntary dismissal in 2021.

The new documents will also be available to members of Congress in the reading room, including files previously marked as duplicates. The release of the files came a day after the Republican-led House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify about the Justice Department's handling of the Epstein files.

Representative Robert Garcia criticized the previous secrecy of the documents and wrote: "We will end this White House cover-up."
