"$3.7 billion in four days" How much is the war against Iran costing the US

The United States and Israel's war against Iran is estimated to have cost Washington $3.7 billion in the first 100 hours alone, or almost $900 million a day, largely due to heavy spending on munitions, according to a new study.

An analysis by the Washington-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) highlights the colossal cost of the war, which entered its seventh day on Friday as the United States attacks Iran with stealth bombers and advanced weapons systems. Researchers Mark Cancian and Chris Park said only a small fraction of the estimated $3.7 billion cost in the first 100 hours — or $891.4 million per day — was already budgeted for, while most of the costs, about $3.5 billion, were not anticipated.

This means the Pentagon is likely to seek additional funding to cover unplanned expenses, which could become a political challenge for Donald Trump's administration and a focal point for opposition to the war.

Domestic concerns about the cost of living, inflation, and rising fuel prices as a result of the conflict are expected to further reduce American support for the war. The conflict is also divisive for Trump's "America First" base, as during the presidential campaigns, he had promised not to get involved in "foreign wars."

Noting that the US Department of Defense has provided few details about the operations, the researchers said their analysis is based on the Congressional Budget Office's estimates of operating and support costs for each military unit, adjusted for inflation and unit size, adding 10 percent for a higher operational pace.

According to the analysis, the United States has used more than 2,000 munitions of various types in the first 100 hours of the war and it is estimated that replacing them with new identical munitions will cost $3.1 billion, while costs increase by $758.1 million per day.

The conflict has also taken a heavy human toll. More than 1,332 people have been killed in Iran since the start of the US and Israeli bombing campaign, according to the Iranian Red Crescent, while UNICEF says at least 181 children are believed to be among the victims.

In Lebanon, the death toll from Israeli attacks this week has reached at least 123 people, according to the country's Health Ministry, as a new wave of attacks hit the country, on one of the fiercest fronts of the war.

At least six American soldiers have died in the conflict, while 11 people have died in Israel. Nine fatalities have also been reported in Gulf Arab countries.
