A decade ago, the world was fascinated by José Mujica, also known as Pepe, the president of Uruguay.

The "adoration" for him came after an official of this rank had chosen not to live in the presidential palace, but lived in a small house with his wife and their dog.

But that's not all that surrounded his unconventional figure.

His life is suitable for a movie script.

In his youth, Pepe robbed banks as a guerilla, survived 15 years in the local prisons, thanks to a friendship with a frog while in the cell.

Despite all that Pepe was the one who transformed his small South American nation into one of the healthiest and most liberal democracies in the world.

Now he is struggling with death, while suffering from a serious disease in the esophagus.
