Israeli warplanes are targeting Hezbollah targets in Lebanon after discovering that the Lebanese group will fire hundreds of rockets at Israel.
"In self-defense to eliminate these threats, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are attacking terrorist targets," said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari.
Israel announced that Lebanese civilians were warned to immediately leave the areas where Hezbollah was active, CNN writes.
Soon after, Hezbollah said it had launched a major drone strike against Israel in response to last month's killing of the group's top military commander.
Sirens warning of incoming rockets could be heard across northern Israel this morning. There are currently no reports of injuries.
In a statement, the IDF said Hezbollah "just fired over 150 rockets from Lebanon towards Israeli territory."
Hezbollah announced that it fired more than 320 rockets at 11 Israeli military bases and barracks, including the Meron base and four sites in the Golan Heights.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared a state of emergency for the next 48 hours.
This means it gives the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) the authority to impose restrictions on the movement of civilians.
After the latest assessment of the situation, Gallant declared a "special situation on the home front" across Israel, according to a statement from the defense ministry.
