The United Kingdom and France will chair a meeting with allies later in the day to discuss joint efforts to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran has virtually closed this strategic waterway near Iran's coast in response to US-Israeli attacks, while the US has begun its own blockade of Iranian ports, which has led to a rise in global energy prices.
Around 40 countries are expected to attend this afternoon's meeting, Keir Starmer's office said, adding that leaders will "focus on supporting the fragile ceasefire in the region and ensuring that shipping lanes are reopened and protected across the Strait in the long term."
Meanwhile, French Economy Minister Roland Leskier stressed that the Strait should be fully reopened, but "not at any price," rejecting the idea of ??paying transit fees.
AFP reports that France's invitation states that they will discuss the possible deployment of a "multinational military protection mission to ensure freedom of navigation."
