Pope Leo XIV said the world is being "destroyed by a handful of tyrants" and criticized world leaders who "manipulate" religion and the name of God for military gain in a powerful speech in Cameroon, as President Donald Trump continued to spar with the Pope.

"Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their military, economic and political gains, dragging what is sacred into darkness and filth," Pope Leo said during his four-nation tour of Africa.

“It is a world turned upside down, an exploitation of God's creation that must be denounced and rejected by every honest conscience.”

The Pope's comments come after Trump's attacks on social media, where the president has shared images generated by artificial intelligence depicting himself as a Jesus-like figure and other religious imagery.

Trump called Leon "weak to crime" on April 12 and criticized him in another post on April 14 defending his war on Iran.

Leo XIV, the first US-born head of the Catholic Church, has been highly critical of armed conflict and reiterated his stance on April 16: The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, but often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild.

Earlier in the week, Leo said he was "not afraid of the Trump administration or of speaking out loud about the Gospel message."

Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who is Catholic, have doubled down on their criticism of the Pope, sparking a backlash from conservative Catholics in the United States.
