US President Donald Trump says the US and Iran are "very close" to reaching a deal and that talks could resume as early as this weekend, A2CNN reports. The development comes as a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has come into effect.
The US President considered this a "historic day" for Lebanon and added that he hopes Hezbollah "behaves well" during the ceasefire.
Israel and Hezbollah continued to exchange attacks along the Lebanese border in the hours before the agreement was set to take effect at midnight local time.
Hezbollah continued to fire rockets into northern Israel until shortly before midnight, when the ceasefire came into effect. Israeli shelling of Lebanese villages reportedly continued for another half hour.
However, the hope is that this ceasefire, brokered by Washington, will advance a peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which do not have diplomatic relations.
President Trump has invited their leaders to the White House for what he described as the "first meaningful talks" between the two countries in more than 40 years.
However, Israel insists its forces will not withdraw from southern Lebanon, where the prime minister said what he called a "security zone" is being created six miles from the border.
Hezbollah has indicated that it will adhere to the ceasefire, but has also said that Israel's continued presence gives the Lebanese the right to resistance, a stance that could cause complications.
