The EU expects Kurti and Vucic to go to Brussels without conditions

The European Union has called on the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, to accept the invitation to participate in the crisis meeting in Brussels, without setting any conditions.

The EU's high representative for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell, has invited Kurti and Vucic for a meeting in Brussels this week, amid heightened tensions between the two countries.

The EU has warned that ignoring this invitation could have consequences for the parties.

The President of Serbia has already refused to meet with Kurt, while the latter has not yet decided whether he will participate in the meeting in Brussels.

EU spokesman Peter Stano said Borrell had invited the two leaders to meet in Brussels "to find a way out of the crisis we are seeing and to return to the path of dialogue".

"The date has not been set yet because the parties have not confirmed their participation. Borrell expects more responsible behavior from the two leaders. The EU expects them to come unconditionally. The European bloc is monitoring the situation to see if the parties are ready to find a solution ," Stano said during a press conference.

He added that on Monday, during the meeting of EU ministers, the issue of tensions between Kosovo and Serbia will be on the agenda.

"Borrell's invitation is an offer and opportunity for them to show that after all they can be constructive. It is not an invitation to please Brussels, but it is for the need to reduce tensions and for the European future of the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia. And for this, no one other than Vucic and Kurti is responsible ", said Stano.

Since the end of May, tensions in the north of Kosovo increased after the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings, amid opposition from the local Serbs.

Tensions culminated on May 29, when Serbian protesters clashed with soldiers of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, in Zveçan. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes.

On June 14, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia worsened even further, after the arrest of three Kosovo police officers.

Serbia said they were arrested "deep" inside its territory, but Kosovo said they were patrolling in Kosovo territory, near the border line with Serbia in Leposavic.  /REL
