The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, was last weekend at the party of the war crimes convict and his political father, Vojislav Sešel.
On June 12, a video from a restaurant in Belgrade went viral on social networks, where Vucic is seen sitting in the company of Sesel, while they sing Chetnik songs.
In the year he was convicted of crimes in Hërtkovci, the police prevented him from entering this Vojvodina village with his radicals.
However, they gathered at the entrance to Hrtkovci, exactly 26 years after a rally of the Serbian Radical Party and after Sesel's speech, which was followed by mass deportations of the Croatian population.
In the same year, the radicals also held a party congress in the house in Hërtkovci, bought by Sesheli.
"His policy is built on sowing and inciting international and inter-religious hatred. He builds his position on this hatred and collects political points", says Gollčevski.
Burning the flags of neighboring countries, the European Union and NATO, then verbal attacks, threats and insults of political dissidents were just some of the political commitments of the radical leaders, after the Hague judgment.
Seshel also applies this through his literary work. Since 2001, he has published nearly 200 books. Among them are the titles: "Hërtkovci, village where everyone knows me" and "Hërtkovci, my youth".
He published the denial of the Srebrenica genocide in three volumes, which he promoted in several cities in Serbia in 2020.
Sesel's publishing house "Serbia e Madhe", which took its name from the political program of the radicals in the 90s, was placed in the center of attention in recent years at the Book Fair in Belgrade, which is the biggest literary event in Serbia.
The history of the relationship between Vučić and Sešel
Vučić and Sešel are linked by the time when wars took place in the former Yugoslavia and Serbia, under the regime of the then president, Slobodan Milosevic, was isolated and under sanctions.
Serbia's current president joined the wartime radicals in 1993 and, two years later, he advanced to the post of party general secretary.
The fight for a "greater Serbia", at that time, was an undisguised policy of the radicals towards their neighbors, while inside the country it was reflected in the persecution of the non-Serb population and threats to the opposition and the media.
In February 2003, Vučić accompanied Sešel to the custody of the Hague Tribunal and visited him there as a legal advisor.
The split occurred in 2008, when Vučić and his party colleague, Tomislav Nikolić, left the radicals and founded the Serbian Progressive Party.
The reason for the separation was officially explained with "disagreements regarding the approval of the Stabilization-Association Agreement of Serbia with the EU", which Vučić and Nikolic supported.
From that moment, Sešeli, from detention in The Hague, published books where he attacked and insulted former comrades-in-arms and accused them of treason and conspiracies.
Vucic responded by calling him a "habitual liar" and a "monster".
The rhetoric from both sides began to change after Sesel's return from The Hague in 2014, when the radical leader's warnings about the overthrow of the Vucic Government were silenced.
Today, Seshel is often a guest on national television, where he attacks and insults the opposition and discusses all socio-political topics.
In the 2022 elections, he supported Vucic's presidential candidacy.
What is the attitude of the Government of Serbia towards war criminals?
The order of participation of war criminals in the political and public life of Serbia began in 2015, with the return of the convicts from The Hague, after serving their sentences.
"We can't even count the cases when those convicted of war crimes become MPs, high officials, among them there are distinguished commentators and analysts on television. We even have a case where a person convicted of war crimes taught at the Military Academy", says Gollčevski.
The former commander of the Pristina Corps, Vladimir Llazarević, returned to Serbia in 2015 on a government plane and was welcomed by several ministers.
The same happened with Nikola Shainović, who after prison for crimes in Kosovo, became part of the Socialists in power.
"The question is whether Serbia is a country that supports justice and victims or war crimes... We cannot support victims when Serbs are victims, and war criminals when Serbs are war criminals. We have to stay on one side or the other and we have to decide", says Gollčevski.
The European Commission's reports on Serbia's progress warn of the trend of glorification of war criminals, from year to year.
In the latest document, to which REL had access, it is stated that "a certain number of Serbian political parties and personalities, including those at the ministerial level, have continued to provide support and public space for convicted war criminals." .
The commission also warns that convicted war criminals continue to spread hate speech in public spaces. (REL)
