'La Kena', the notorious leader of a Mexican cartel, is arrested

The leader of a notorious Gulf cartel in Mexico has been arrested, local media reports. Jose Alberto Garcia Vilano, also known as La Kena or Cyclone 19, allegedly leads Los Cyclones.

Vilano was reportedly captured at a shopping mall in the city of Monterrey after information about his whereabouts was leaked to officials. García Vilano was captured along with three other people inside a store.

The Tamaulipas Attorney General's Office had offered a reward of two and a half million pesos for information leading to his location and arrest.

His group is accused of kidnapping four American citizens in March last year, killing two of them. The four American citizens were kidnapped in the border town of Matamoros, which lies directly across from the Texas city of Brownsville, in the United States.

Matamoros is among warring factions of the Gulf Cartel as they battle for control of the so-called plazas – drug smuggling routes from the north into the US.

The four Americans drove across the border and into the troubled city for cosmetic surgery, according to relatives. It is not unusual for Americans to travel to Mexico for medical services, where the procedures are much cheaper, but sometimes more dangerous.
