A court in Thailand has sentenced a man to 50 years in prison for comments he made on social media against the monarchy.

According to experts, this is the highest sentence ever given under the infamous "Lese Majeste" law.

30-year-old Mongkol Thirakot was initially sentenced to 28 years for posts he made three years ago on Facebook. But on Thursday the Court of Appeal added an additional 22 years to the sentence.

The "Lese Majeste" law criminalizes any negative comments about the monarchy. It has been widely criticized and is still in power despite the election last year of a civilian government.

The details that led to such a harsh sentence for Thirakot, an online clothing seller from Chiang Rai province, have not been released. The judge referred to multiple Facebook comments, and Thai courts typically stack additional sentences for each individual post.
