Greek authorities on Monday froze the assets of European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili following her arrest on corruption charges allegedly linked to Qatar, local media reported.
Eva Kaili, one of the 14 vice-presidents of the European legislative body from Greece's center-left party PASOK-KINAL, was detained by Belgian police on Friday after her home was searched, according to Belgian daily Le Soir.
According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, authorities also froze "bank accounts, safes, companies and other financial assets" of her relatives.
Also, the bank accounts of a real estate company in Kolonaki, which was founded by Kaili and her husband, are being frozen, ERT said.
Qatar has rejected "baseless and grossly misinformed" accusations of misconduct that have shocked the European Parliament.
"Qatar categorically opposes any attempt to link him to allegations of misconduct. Any association of the Qatari government with the reported allegations is baseless and grossly misinformed,” Doha's mission to the EU said in a statement on Sunday.
He added that the Gulf state "works through institution-by-institution engagement and acts in full compliance with international laws and regulations."
The statement comes amid emerging reports of an alleged corruption case in the European parliament involving bribes to try to sway its opinion.
On Friday, her father was also arrested after he was found in possession of a large amount of money in a suitcase, local reports said.
Those arrested along with Kaili also included Luca Visentini, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, as well as Pier Antonio Panzeri, a former S&D MP from Italy who chaired the parliament's subcommittee on human rights./AA
