The United States expressed deep concern about the current situation in the north of Kosovo and called for the immediate dismantling of the erected barricades.

From Saturday afternoon, some local Serbs set up barricades in the municipalities of Leposavič, Zveçan and Zubin Potok in northern Kosovo and blocked several roads.

They took this action after the Kosovo Police arrested the former Serbian official of this institution, Dejan Pantiç, on suspicion of having organized a "terrorist attack" in the offices of the Central Election Commission in the north of Kosovo.

In a joint statement to the media, the US embassies in Pristina and Belgrade said that "this arrest is being used as a justification for illegal roadblocks, as well as threats and intimidation of the Kosovar authorities and the local population."

"We call on everyone to exercise maximum restraint, take immediate measures to de-escalate the situation and refrain from provocative acts. We urge the parties to work within the EU-facilitated dialogue to resolve the relevant issues," said the statement issued on Sunday afternoon.

It also expresses support for the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, and for the European mission for the rule of law, EULEX.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that he expects KFOR to remove the barricades from the north, while the Minister of Internal Affairs, Xelal Sveçla, called on the Serbs themselves to remove them.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that his message to the Serbs from Kosovo is that "there is no surrender and there will be no surrender"./REL
