A new journalistic investigation has brought to light a series of records and evidence of the mistreatment of migrants in Bulgaria, Hungary and Croatia. This is happening before the eyes of Frontex. In the video, which was also seen by the journalists of the Monitor magazine, people can be seen locked in a dilapidated hut, sitting on the floor surrounded by garbage. All around them are bare walls and metal bars, the roof is leaking. There is no furniture or toilet.
The barred hut is located in the courtyard of the Bulgarian border police station. The people who are imprisoned here are refugees from Syria and Afghanistan who are seeking protection in the EU.
The report of the television magazine Monitor, produced by the German public television ARD, is part of the cooperation with several international media. As they report, this is the first time a type of migrant detention center has been filmed from inside, where people are held and mistreated before police illegally deport them from the EU.
The entries from Bulgaria were made in a period of five days. The doors of the barracks were constantly guarded, while journalists saw people later being loaded into cars and driven away.
Some refugees state that they have been imprisoned and kept without water and food for several days. After that, the Bulgarian police returned them to the border and forced them to return to Turkey - without being able to apply for asylum in the EU.
"Breaking laws"
Lawyer Konstantin Hruska from the Max Planck Institute in Munich considers such a practice as a multiple violation of rights: "It is an absolute violation of the law. Under no circumstances should we give up the prohibition of inhumane or humiliating treatment of refugees or immigrants", Hrushka told Monitor.
"The deprivation of liberty itself is illegal, as well as the subsequent deportation across the border without any procedure," the lawyer added. Other footage available to the research team also shows violence. Bulgarian police are seen beating people lying on the ground with sticks. Many refugees report that the police have turned the dogs on them.
Official Sofia is silent on this. In a recent press conference, Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev referred only to the alleged increase in aggressive behavior by migrants, adding that police are taking care to treat refugees humanely.
Arrests before the eyes of Frontex?
Brukseli "i kupton gjërat seriozisht"
"It shows an incredible contempt for human beings," adds Michalski. In November, the European Commission declared that Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania meet the conditions for membership in the Schengen area, with the assertions that basic human rights are respected there. But Austria and the Netherlands have declared against Bulgaria and Romania, so only Croatia has been accepted in this area.
As for the investigations of journalists, the European Commission emphasizes that it takes very seriously the accusations of "improper behavior" by the police. But it indicates that the members themselves are responsible for respecting human rights and clarifying the accusations./ DW
