The Trump administration has ordered US embassies around the world to immediately stop scheduling visa interviews for foreign students as it prepares to implement a comprehensive social media check on all international applicants.

A State Department cable on Tuesday instructs consular sections to stop adding "any additional capacity for student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointments until further instructions are issued" within days.

The directive, first reported by Politico and now confirmed by The Guardian, could significantly delay visa processing and harm universities, many of which Donald Trump accuses of having far-left ideologies that rely heavily on foreign students for revenue, The Guardian reports.

"The department is conducting a review of existing operations and processes for screening and verifying student and exchange visitor visa applicants," the cable said. Officials plan to issue guidance on "enhanced social media screening for all such applicants."

According to NAFSA, there are more than one million international students in the United States, contributing nearly $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy and supporting more than 378,000 jobs in 2023-2024. The visa freeze threatens to exacerbate existing challenges facing higher education institutions that are already experiencing declining international enrollment.
