US President Donald Trump's administration has taken steps to end Harvard's ability to enroll international students, escalating a clash with America's oldest university.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on the social media platform "X" that the administration has revoked the certification of Harvard's "Exchange Student and Visitor Program" as a result of their failure to comply with the law.

"Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country," she wrote.

Harvard called the action "illegal" in a statement.

University data shows that nearly 7,000 international students enrolled at the institution last academic year, making up 27.2% of its student body.

Previously, the Trump administration has accused Harvard of failing to adequately protect Jewish students from antisemitic discrimination and harassment, particularly in the context of pro-Palestinian protests on campus following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza.

The administration claims that Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to effectively address these issues and has threatened to withhold funding.
