A man opened fire at a Colorado nightclub late Saturday, killing five people and wounding 18 others in the latest shooting incident in the United States.

The attack took place at a club frequented by members of the LGBT community in a year when rhetoric against them has increased among extremists.

Lt. Pamela Castro of the Colorado Springs Police Department said police were notified of the shooting at the Q Club shortly before midnight.

She added that a suspect in the attack was wounded and was being treated, and that it was not immediately clear if the attacker was shot by officers.

Lt. Castro said the FBI was on the scene and assisting with the case.

"We are devastated by the senseless attack on our community," a Q Club Facebook post said.
