At least three people have been killed after a shooting at an American university. After the shooting, the attacker fled on foot and is described as a short black male, wearing a hat, red shoes and a denim jacket.
He later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In addition to the casualties, police said five people were taken to hospital, some in critical condition.
The incident occurred at 8:18 p.m. local time when gunshots rang out in Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus.
Students and staff were told to "secure themselves immediately" after officers responded to multiple 911 calls.
Police said the gunman also opened fire on the nearby university union and was last seen leaving the building on foot.
A large number are likely to be stranded as around 50,000 people are part of the campus, which also hosts evening classes.
About four hours after the initial call, police said the gunman was found dead outside campus with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after "contact" with law enforcement.
Chris Rozman, of Michigan State University Police, said "multiple" officers had responded within minutes and provided first aid at both shooting sites.
Two of the victims died in Berkey Hall and the other in the MSU union, Mr. Rozman.
He told reporters that "hundreds" of police and law enforcement personnel were involved in the hunt for the gunman. The campus is about 90 miles northwest of Detroit.
